Andrew is a qualified teacher in both the US and UK. Andrew holds an MAT in teaching English and English as a Second/Other Language and MA in cultural policy and management. He has also had the opportunity to work with the International Baccalaureate (IB) to improve their social emotional learning program and with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
Andrew’s guiding philosophies of education exist across this entire site, but can be expressed through a few guiding principles. His overall approach is to “guide not decide.” This manifests as a leader and educator by listening first, understanding the needs that are spoken and unspoken, and then providing frameworks and strategies that will best achieve long-term success. Since this approach is not one of dictatorial rule, but as a pathway of personal growth, agreement on what the key goals are, and a partnered motivation to reach that goal, are vital to the progress and prosperity that we seek to achieve as a team.
What then does a good partner look like? This can be summed up in four expectations. These are: respect yourself, respect others, be honest, and try. By respecting yourself you learn introspection and the ability to advocate for your needs that may not be obvious to others. By respecting others you learn to actively listen, be receptive, quiet your ego, develop empathy, and build communication skills. By being honest we give ourselves and others the best chance to address the reality or underlying puzzle of the situation. Lastly, by trying you develop perseverance and show your active engagement with the process at play.
